Minister sends best wishes to new Western Isles sensory project
02 February 2011
I would like to pass on my best wishes on the opening of the Western Isles Sensory Project in Stornoway which I am sure will make lives better for people with sensory needs and their carers throughout the Western Isles.
This will be the first dedicated sensory service in the area which was previously delivered by staff visiting from the mainland. The need for high quality support services for people of all ages affected by sensory loss is long recognised by the Scottish Government which is why this project is one of many being funded throughout Scotland.
The needs and numbers of people with sensory needs are projected to more than double over the next 20 years, and people with dual sensory needs are also on the increase. The sensory spectrum is wide and individual, and numbers are increasing, so much so it is now becoming a mainstream issue.
The project demonstrates the importance of good joint working on the ground involving as it does Sight Action, Faire and Occupational Therapy staff. It will:
- Build on the achievements of Sight Action:
- Develop new community support services to people affected by deafness;
- Raise mutual awareness amongst various health and social care agencies, promoting safer and more independent living options for people who may have sensory and/or physical support needs;
- Improve mainstream assessments and direct care provision.
