Children's ServicesImage of child holding a spoon

At Sight Action we give emotional support and information at the time of diagnosis to parents of children with a serious sight loss.

Our specialist staff visit parents and children at home to help us better understand parents' and children’s needs and the type of support required.

Our many practical skills help children to make the most of life. We are able to support parents to aid their child’s development and overcome some of the problems they may face.

We also provide a wide range of useful information and put parents in touch with other professional staff, as well as introducing them to other parents of partially sighted children. Here are more details:

Pre-school Parent Support Group:

This parent-led group gives parents and children the chance to meet up with other families, share your experiences or just chat. Guest speakers often attend the meetings to provide information and lead discussion. It provides an opportunity to meet informally with a range of professionals. Creche facilities are available for the children and lunch is provided.

Family Fun Days: Image of party balloons

These are great events for meeting up with other parents and children in an informal, fun atmosphere. Playing with others gives children more confidence and, with support and encouragement, they can try out new activities. It is also a great opportunity to enthusiastically join in children’s play activities.

Financial Benefits:

All the information and advice to ensure parents receive all the financial benefits to which they are entitled.  We follow up advice and financial benefit checks by helping you complete the necessary paperwork. We will support parents through the whole process from application to completion, including the appeal process if necessary.

Low Vision Aid ClinicImage of magnifier on a dictionary
Children can attend our low vision aid clinic on an annual basis. The clinic gives children a friendly and informal opportunity to see an optometrist (optician) and it can provide a suitable low vision aid. These aids (magnifiers or similar devices) can be extremely helpful for use at home or school and can assist independent travel. We will help the child to use them.
