Ross-shire woman tells of Sight Action's 'fantastic support'

A Ross-shire woman is one of many people supported by Sight Action. More than ten years ago she was diagnosed with an eyesight condition and quickly referred to Sight Action by the Eye Clinic.

Rehabilitation Officer Alison Fraser paid her a visit and since then a strong connection has developed between her and the charity.

She recalled:

“Alison was a fantastic support for me and my family. She helped them understand what it’s actually like to have impaired sight.

“She gave me and my family our lives back. She has given me the confidence to tackle things on my own.”

Initially Alison took her out and trained her to use a white cane on a route to her local shop and back.

“I was taught how to recognise certain stops like a bridge. Now I can take the bus to Inverness and walk up to Sight Action’s offices on my own. I know where to cross the road safely,” she said.

The training and support has been ongoing over the last decade and she has completed the seven mile route at the Great Wilderness Challenge from Poolewe two years in a row.

She added:

“Sight Action have also taught me basic computer skills and I’m currently learning Braille. I would never have had the confidence to do all these things without them.”
